How I turned my Zombie Apocalypse Plan into an Early Retirement Plan.

Preppers are crazy right? Am I right? Well, to me, it depends on the level of crazy. I may not have ever been a boy scout but I have been caught without something I needed several times and learned the hard lesson of being prepared.

Since I have been in the military some active and some Guard, we all talk about zombie plans and love the logistical scenarios we have come up with.  First I define “zombie” as a loose term of any group that want to deprive me of my life or property. I am much more concerned of an organized group of marauders than actual mindless zombies.

I realized early on; there is no safe place to live and whatever event that may cause the degradation of society isn’t as important as what you do if you are able to survive it. How lucky are those who don’t have to go through the survival.

Worst case scenario: I read a book a while back called a sec after. Basically someone sets off an EMP blast that takes out all electronics. No power grid, no cars, no communications. Instantly back to the Stone Age. It would cause a total breakdown of society without any loss of life as other catastrophes would. This is also a large scale instead of a regional such as Katrina. So I plan for no electricity and total breakdown of society.

Ok you survived now what? Most people when I talk to them, especially in the south, always say they will “take to the hills” Most have done some hunting in their lives and assume they will just be able to go into the woods and survive. I don’t know if they just don’t watch those reality shows but even in the best of conditions that is a tough job. Now imagine everyone in an entire city taking to the hills and over hunting everything. So I have to plan that all large land animals will be hunted to extinction. I also have to assume that all lakes and rivers will be over fished and it also leave you vulnerable to attack if you do catch something.

Cabin in the woods: Lots of people I talk to have or know of a cabin in the woods. The major problem with that is defense. A single location will have a trail leading up to it and if you have any food stores they will quickly become a target for the zombies. History has shown that no matter what defenses a static location has eventually it can be overtaken.

Holy crap what do I do now? Well originally I thought since I was a career military man I would live close to a base. I assumed if things got bad I would be able to get on base and have the community to help serve and protect. I mean they have actual plans for this entire scenario. Well I was on a fishing trip on a large head boat and there happen to be a Sergeant Major of a large military installation. I started telling him of my zombie plan in hopes he would tell me a good place to buy land or where I should live. The hammer fell when he told me that if things went that far south they shut down the base and no one is allowed on that isn’t assigned to that base. Well holy crap again.

The current solution: While I was sitting on that boat watching people pull in some decent snapper, I realized I was sitting on the solution. The ocean has the only renewable food source. I needed a boat. Not just any boat though. I needed a boat that could run with no electricity. I started looking into sailboats. I went on a catamaran and fell in love with it. I have been searching for a suitable one ever since and every time I go on any vacation I always pick one to go on. I like to talk to the captains and learn the pros and cons of sailing them. In my article “sailing-around-the-world-literally” I go over the issues I am going through to cover that.

Time to retire:  I look at the preppers that may or may not be crazy but the vast amounts of money they are spending on prepping for the end of it all. I do not have an issue with that. I, on the other hand, am super cheap so I have been able to combine my zombie plan with my retirement. If it does go down, no worries, I will be sailing away from them. If it never happens then, AWESOME! I get to sail all over the world.
